Do you ever wonder what Spirit of Joy's women of the ELCA are up to? Well... we serve each other, the congregation, and our community. At our monthly meeting this past Saturday, we adopted a Bible verse for the year: "In his grace, God has given us different gifts... serving others, serve them well... encourage others, be encouraging, giving, give generously." (Romans 12:6-8 NLT)
We immediately put this verse into practice! In addition to tithing 10% of our monthly offering to Spirit of Joy and another 10% to our Synod, we unanimously agreed that we would take 10% of any fundraising events (bake sales, flower mart, etc) and purchase Walmart gift cards that Pastor Ed can give to needy families at his discretion. Many of our members are out of work. These gift cards will help them purchase groceries and help to provide for the basic needs of their family. And, it will provide much-needed encouragement and show them that their church family cares.
Additionally, we agreed to use money from previous fundraising events to hire someone to come in and seal the kitchen floors. Due to limited funds, this was never completed during the building of the new Family Life Center. We agreed that the longer we wait to seal the floors, the more damaged and stained the floors will become. We all feel that contracting someone to provide this needed service is a way that we can support our church in a tangible way.
